    PAN photo and signature size

These are the scanned-image specifications Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) publishes for PAN applications made with scanned images — the e-Sign scanned and DSC scanned modes, for a new PAN or a change or correction.

    PhotographSignatureSupporting documents
    Resolution200 DPI200 DPI200 DPI
    TypeColourColourBlack & white
    File typeJPEGJPEGPDF/A or JPEG
SizeMax. 20 KBMax. 10 KBMax. 300 KB per page
    Dimension3.5 × 2.5 cm2 × 4.5 cmNot stated
Protean publishes two different size limits. The guideline pages on its PAN portal say a maximum of 20 KB for the photo and 10 KB for the signature. Its newer articles on proteantech.in say a maximum of 50 KB for each. No official page says which one the upload form enforces today, so this tool stays under 20 KB and 10 KB — a file that size passes either limit.
Why 197 × 276 and 354 × 157 pixels. Protean states the dimensions in centimetres at 200 DPI. Its articles give the order: the photo is 3.5 cm high and 2.5 cm wide, the signature 2 cm high and 4.5 cm wide. At 200 DPI that is 197 × 276 px for the photo and 354 × 157 px for the signature, and the files are saved with a 200 DPI density so they read correctly if the form checks it.

    UTIITSL applications

UTIITSL's own online form for Form No. 93 (individuals) and Form No. 94 (entities) checks uploads more loosely than Protean's guidelines:

File typeJPEG, JPG or PNGJPEG, JPG or PNGPDF
    SizeMax. 30 KBMax. 60 KBMax. 5 MB
Pixel size / DPINot checkedNot checked—
One file works for both. The files this tool makes (photo under 20 KB, signature under 10 KB, JPEG) are inside UTIITSL's 30 KB and 60 KB limits too, so you do not need a separate version. UTIITSL publishes these limits only as the checks in its upload form, not in a written guideline, so they could change without notice.

From 1 April 2026 both agencies accept only the new forms (Form No. 93 and 94 replace Form 49A, and new change-request forms replace the old one), as UTIITSL's homepage notes.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the PAN card photo size in KB?

Protean's PAN guidelines say a maximum of 20 KB for the photograph, JPEG, colour, 200 DPI, 3.5 x 2.5 cm. Its newer articles say up to 50 KB. A photo under 20 KB passes both.

What is the PAN card signature size?

JPEG at 200 DPI, 2 cm high by 4.5 cm wide, and a maximum of 10 KB on Protean's guideline pages (50 KB in its articles).

What is the PAN photo size in pixels?

Protean states 3.5 x 2.5 cm at 200 DPI, which is 197 pixels wide by 276 pixels high.

What is the UTIITSL PAN photo and signature size?

UTIITSL's online Form 93/94 upload accepts a JPEG, JPG or PNG photo up to 30 KB and signature up to 60 KB, with no pixel-size check. The files from this tool (under 20 KB and 10 KB) pass those limits.

Do I need a photo for e-KYC PAN?

No. With Aadhaar e-KYC the photo is taken from your Aadhaar record; you upload scanned images only in the e-Sign or DSC scanned mode.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The crop and compression run in your browser on your own device.

The scan specification table is from guideline (k) of Protean eGov Technologies' Guidelines for filling PAN New Application, repeated in the change request guidelines and the DSC guidelines. The 50 KB figures are from Protean's article on updating a PAN photo. Checked 29 October 2026.

The UTIITSL limits are the file checks in the upload step of UTIITSL's online application for Form No. 93 and 94 (its form validation script rejects a photo over 30 KB and a signature over 60 KB, and accepts JPEG, JPG or PNG). The 4.5 × 3.5 cm printed-photo size is from UTIITSL's Instructions for filling Form No. 93. Checked 29 October 2026. We are not affiliated with Protean, UTIITSL or the Income Tax Department.
