    Note the format. The photo ID is one of the few uploads UPSC wants as a JPG image rather than a PDF. People who scanned their Aadhaar to PDF, as they would for a certificate, get an invalid-format error. If that is you, convert it with our PDF to JPG tool first and bring the image back here.

    Which ID to use

    UPSC's examination notice asks candidates to hold details of one photo ID card — Aadhaar, Voter Card (EPIC), PAN, Passport, Driving Licence, or another photo ID issued by a State or Central Government authority. The Commission specifically advises using Aadhaar for easier verification and authentication.

    The same card is used for reference throughout the process, and candidates are advised to carry it to the examination and the Personality Test, so choose one you will still have to hand months later.

    Getting a clean capture

    1. Lay the card flat on a plain surface in even light. Avoid the shadow of your own phone falling across it.
    2. Shoot straight down, not at an angle, so the edges stay square and the text stays readable.
    3. Crop away the background using the box above, so the file size is spent on the card rather than your table.
    4. Check the number and your name are legible in the downloaded file. A file that fits the size limit but cannot be read still fails at verification.
    If the result comes out under 20KB. A tightly cropped, high-contrast card scan can compress below UPSC's minimum. Compression cannot fix that — it only makes files smaller. Recapture at a higher resolution, keep it in colour rather than black and white, and leave a little margin around the card.

    What size should the UPSC photo ID be?

    JPG between 20KB and 200KB, saved with the filename id_card. Both ends of the range apply, so a file under 20KB is rejected as well as one over 200KB.

    Which ID can I upload?

    UPSC's notice lists Aadhaar, Voter Card (EPIC), PAN, Passport, Driving Licence, or another photo ID issued by a State or Central Government body. The Commission advises using Aadhaar for smoother verification.

    Does it have to be a JPG?

    Yes. The photo ID is an image upload, not a PDF. If you scanned your card to PDF you will need an image instead — our PDF to JPG tool can convert it.

    Can I upload both sides of my card?

    UPSC's instruction table lists a single file for the photo ID. If you need both sides in one image you will have to combine them before uploading, and you should check the portal's own guidance for your exam.

    My scan is under 20KB. What do I do?

    Rescan at a higher resolution or in colour. Compression only makes files smaller, so there is no way to fix an under-sized file except to capture more detail.

    Are my ID documents uploaded anywhere?

    No. Your card is processed entirely inside your browser on your own device and is never transmitted. That matters here more than anywhere, because an ID card carries your name, photograph and identity number.
