    The name-and-date band

    This is the requirement that catches most people out, and it is the reason a plain resizer is not enough for TNPSC. The notification states that the candidate's name and the date of photography must be printed at the bottom of the photograph, and it fixes the proportions: of the 4.5 cm total height, your image occupies 3.0 cm and the name-and-date band occupies 1.5 cm.

    Put the date the photograph was taken, not your date of birth. For an online application, that date must be on or after the date of the notification you are applying to. For One Time Registration, the photograph must have been taken within the last three months.

    About the pixel size. The notification gives two ways to derive dimensions and they do not agree. It prints a figure of 130 × 170 pixels, and it separately instructs you to scan at 200 DPI — which for 3.5 × 4.5 cm works out at 276 × 354 pixels. We tested both against real photographs: at 130 × 170 a JPEG tops out around 18–21 KB even at maximum quality, so it cannot reliably clear the 20 KB minimum. At 276 × 354 it lands comfortably inside 20–50 KB every time. This tool therefore uses the DPI-derived size, which is the only reading consistent with the file-size requirement.

    What size should a TNPSC photo be?

    Why does my photo need my name and date on it?

    TNPSC requires the candidate's name and the date the photograph was taken to be printed at the bottom of the photo. The notification is specific about the proportions: of the 4.5 cm total height, your image occupies 3.0 cm and the name and date band occupies 1.5 cm.

    Which date do I put on the photograph?

    Can I use a selfie or a phone photo?

    No. The notification explicitly rejects photographs taken with cellular phones, selfies, photocopies of photographs, and pictures taken at family functions, tourist places, or against a backdrop of plants or buildings. It asks for a studio photograph against a white background.

    Is my photo uploaded to a server?

    No. The crop, the name band and the compression all happen in your browser on your own device. Your photograph is never transmitted.
