PDF.js renders pages to a canvas for PDF-to-JPG and for the compressor's image handling. Tesseract performs OCR. The compressor locates embedded JPEG (DCTDecode) image streams, downsamples and re-encodes them, and writes them back in place, leaving text and vector content untouched. Password protection uses a PDF encryption routine applied before saving. All of this runs in the browser; there is no server-side processing.
